Official NEET exam pattern: the only official weightage#

The NEET (UG) 2026 information bulletin fixes the paper at 180 compulsory questions in 180 minutes (3 hours), written on an OMR sheet in pen-and-paper mode. Physics has 45 questions (180 marks), Chemistry 45 questions (180 marks) and Biology, covering Botany and Zoology, 90 questions (360 marks), for a total of 720 marks. Each correct answer gets +4, each wrong answer −1 and an unanswered question 0. For the 21 June 2026 re-examination, NTA kept the 180 questions but allowed 195 minutes (2:00 pm to 5:15 pm), adding 15 minutes to cover exam-hall formalities.

This "180 compulsory questions" pattern returned for NEET (UG) 2025, when NTA removed the optional Section B questions used in earlier years. If you see older material describing "35 + 15 optional" questions per subject or a 3 hour 20 minute paper, it is out of date.

The NEET (UG) 2027 information bulletin had not been released as of 7 October 2026. Check neet.nta.nic.in (opens in a new tab) when it comes out, and see our NEET eligibility and age limit guide for the other rules.

Where the NEET syllabus comes from#

The syllabus is set by the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of the National Medical Commission and published by NTA. The NEET (UG) 2026 syllabus (UGMEB public notice dated 22 December 2025, posted on the NTA website) lists 20 units in Physics, 20 in Chemistry and 10 in Biology. These units follow the NCERT Class 11 and 12 textbooks, which is why NCERT remains the base book for every subject.

Some topics found in older NEET guides do not appear as separate units in the 2026 Chemistry list, for example Hydrogen, s-Block Elements, States of Matter, Environmental Chemistry, Polymers and Chemistry in Everyday Life. Before you drop any topic, open the official syllabus PDF and read the sub-topics under each unit, because some ideas are folded into other units. The NEET 2027 syllabus had not been published at the time of writing.

NEET Biology chapter wise weightage#

Biology is half the paper, so it decides most ranks. The tiers below use the ten official units.

PriorityBiology units (NEET 2026 syllabus)
HighHuman Physiology; Genetics and Evolution; Reproduction; Ecology and Environment; Plant Physiology; Diversity in Living World
MediumCell Structure and Function; Structural Organisation in Animals and Plants; Biotechnology and Its Applications
LowerBiology and Human Welfare

How to use this: Human Physiology and Genetics carry many chapters each, so they deserve the most revision cycles. Ecology and Biotechnology are short and closely tied to NCERT wording, which makes them quick to revise. "Lower" does not mean "skip": any unit in the official syllabus can be asked.

NEET biology important questions: what they look like

Most Biology questions test exact NCERT statements, diagrams and tables: match-the-column pairs, "statement I and statement II" items, assertion-reason items and labelled diagrams. The best practice is to read each NCERT chapter, then attempt chapter-wise questions that quote or twist NCERT lines.

NEET Chemistry chapter wise weightage#

PriorityChemistry units (NEET 2026 syllabus)
HighChemical Bonding and Molecular Structure; Some Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry; Organic Compounds Containing Oxygen; Co-ordination Compounds; Chemical Thermodynamics; Equilibrium; p-Block Elements; d- and f-Block Elements
MediumSome Basic Concepts in Chemistry; Atomic Structure; Solutions; Redox Reactions and Electrochemistry; Chemical Kinetics; Classification of Elements and Periodicity; Hydrocarbons; Organic Compounds Containing Halogens; Organic Compounds Containing Nitrogen; Biomolecules
LowerPurification and Characterisation of Organic Compounds; Principles Related to Practical Chemistry

Inorganic units (bonding, p-block, d- and f-block, coordination compounds) are largely NCERT-based and reward repeated reading. Physical Chemistry needs formula practice: mole concept, equilibrium constants, ΔG = ΔH − TΔS, rate laws and the Nernst equation. Organic Chemistry needs reaction maps you can redraw from memory.

NEET Physics chapter wise weightage#

PriorityPhysics units (NEET 2026 syllabus)
HighElectrostatics; Current Electricity; Optics; Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation; Atoms and Nuclei; Electronic Devices; Laws of Motion; Work, Energy and Power; Rotational Motion; Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism
MediumPhysics and Measurement; Kinematics; Gravitation; Properties of Solids and Liquids; Thermodynamics; Kinetic Theory of Gases; Oscillations and Waves; Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents
LowerElectromagnetic Waves; Experimental Skills

Modern Physics units (Dual Nature, Atoms and Nuclei, Electronic Devices) are short and formula-driven, for example E = hν and λ = h/p, so they give good returns for the time spent. Mechanics and Electricity need steady numerical practice because they feed into other chapters.

NEET important topics across subjects#

  • Biology: human physiology systems, Mendelian inheritance and molecular basis of inheritance, plant and animal kingdom classification, photosynthesis and respiration in plants, human reproduction and reproductive health, ecosystem and biodiversity.
  • Chemistry: VSEPR and hybridisation, IUPAC naming and isomerism, coordination compound nomenclature and isomerism, named organic reactions, equilibrium and pH, thermodynamics.
  • Physics: Coulomb's law and capacitors, Kirchhoff's laws, ray optics and lens formula, photoelectric effect, logic gates and diodes, Newton's laws and rotational motion.

Revision order: how to plan around weightage#

  1. First pass (NCERT): read every unit once, Biology daily, so no unit is left untouched.
  2. Second pass (high priority): spend extra cycles on the high-priority units in all three subjects, with chapter-wise questions after each.
  3. Third pass (medium and lower): finish these with short notes and mixed questions.
  4. Full mock tests: take 3-hour tests on an OMR sheet and mark weak units in an error log.
  5. Final month: revise NCERT Biology line by line, formula sheets for Physics and Chemistry, and redo your error log.

Frequently asked questions

Does NTA publish NEET chapter wise weightage?

No. NTA publishes the syllabus and the subject-wise pattern (45 Physics, 45 Chemistry and 90 Biology questions in NEET UG 2026), but not marks per chapter. Any chapter-wise number you see is an estimate from past papers.

Which units are most important in NEET Biology?

Human Physiology, Genetics and Evolution, Reproduction, Ecology and Environment, Plant Physiology and Diversity in Living World are high priority because they cover many NCERT chapters and appear regularly in past papers.

What is the NEET chemistry chapter wise weightage for organic chemistry?

NTA does not give a figure. Organic units such as Some Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry and Organic Compounds Containing Oxygen are high priority in our tiers, with hydrocarbons, halogen and nitrogen compounds and biomolecules as medium priority.

How many questions are there in NEET in total?

The NEET UG 2026 paper had 180 compulsory questions for 720 marks, with +4 for a correct answer and minus 1 for a wrong one. The bulletin set 3 hours; the 21 June 2026 re-examination allowed 3 hours 15 minutes. Confirm the 2027 pattern in the NEET UG 2027 bulletin when NTA releases it.

Can I skip lower priority chapters for NEET?

It is not advisable. Every unit in the official syllabus can be asked, and lower priority units are often short. Finish them with NCERT reading and a set of chapter questions.
