NCERT first: why it comes before every other book#
The NEET (UG) syllabus is finalised by the National Medical Commission and published by NTA, and its units are built on the NCERT Class 11 and 12 textbooks. Biology questions in particular test NCERT sentences, diagrams, tables and examples. If a topic is not in NCERT or the official syllabus, it should not take much of your time.
How to use NCERT well:
- Read every Biology chapter at least three times over your preparation: once to understand, once to mark facts and diagrams, once for quick revision.
- In Chemistry, treat NCERT as the main text for Inorganic and Organic chapters, including in-text reactions and tables.
- In Physics, use NCERT to understand derivations and solved examples, then move to practice books for numericals.
- Solve the NCERT exercise questions before any reference book.
Download the current textbooks free from NCERT's official site (opens in a new tab). NCERT is replacing its textbooks class by class under the new National Curriculum Framework, so check the site for the current Class 11 and 12 editions before you buy printed copies. Always compare chapters with the official NEET 2026 syllabus (opens in a new tab) and our NEET chapter wise weightage list.
Best books for NEET Biology#
⇆ Swipe sideways to see the whole table
| Book | Author / publisher | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| NCERT Biology Class 11 and 12 | NCERT | The core text; line-by-line reading |
| Trueman's Elementary Biology (Vol 1 and 2) | K.N. Bhatia and M.P. Tyagi (Trueman Book Company) | Extra explanation of tough topics such as genetics and physiology |
| NCERT at your Fingertips: Biology | MTG Learning Media | MCQs built on NCERT lines |
Biology is 360 of the 720 marks, so most of your book time should go here. One NCERT-based MCQ book plus past NEET papers is enough practice; collecting several question banks usually leads to unfinished books.
Best book for chemistry for NEET#
⇆ Swipe sideways to see the whole table
| Book | Author / publisher | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| NCERT Chemistry Class 11 and 12 | NCERT | Inorganic and Organic theory, reactions, tables |
| Problems in Physical Chemistry | N. Avasthi (Shri Balaji Publications) | Mole concept, equilibrium, thermodynamics, kinetics, electrochemistry numericals |
| Elementary Problems in Organic Chemistry | M.S. Chouhan (Shri Balaji Publications) | Reaction mechanism and conversion practice |
| Concise Inorganic Chemistry | J.D. Lee (Wiley adaptation) | Reference only, for doubts in bonding and block chemistry |
For Inorganic Chemistry, NCERT itself is the best book: questions often use its wording and tables. Do not start J.D. Lee cover to cover; dip into it only when NCERT leaves a doubt.
Best physics book for NEET#
⇆ Swipe sideways to see the whole table
| Book | Author / publisher | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| NCERT Physics Class 11 and 12 | NCERT | Concepts, derivations, solved examples |
| Concepts of Physics (Vol 1 and 2) | H.C. Verma (Bharati Bhawan) | Building concepts and solving standard problems |
| Objective Physics for NEET | D.C. Pandey (Arihant) | Large sets of NEET-style MCQs by chapter |
| Fundamentals of Physics | Halliday, Resnick and Walker (Wiley) | Optional reading for students who want more depth |
Physics is where many NEET students lose marks, mostly through slow calculation. Pick H.C. Verma or one objective book, finish it, and then shift to timed mixed practice.
NEET preparation books for practice and previous year papers#
- Past NEET papers: solve recent papers in exam conditions. NTA posts official notices and answer keys on neet.nta.nic.in (opens in a new tab); use the exam pattern of the year you are preparing for.
- Chapter-wise question books: one per subject is enough.
- Mock tests: from the last four to five months, take full 3-hour tests on an OMR sheet.
- Your own notes: a short formula sheet for Physics and Chemistry and a facts notebook for Biology are often more useful in the final month than any new book.
Books for Tamil-medium students#
Tamil Nadu State Board students study Physics, Chemistry, Bio-Botany and Bio-Zoology in Class 11 and 12 from textbooks published by the Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation. These are available in both Tamil and English medium on the official TN textbooks site (opens in a new tab).
What NTA allows for Tamil-medium students, from the NEET (UG) 2026 information bulletin:
- NEET (UG) 2026 was conducted in 13 languages, including Tamil.
- A Tamil-medium paper is offered at exam centres in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, along with English and Hindi.
- If there is any ambiguity in a translated question, the English version is treated as final.
NEET NCERT books in Tamil medium
We could not confirm an official Tamil edition of the NCERT Class 11 and 12 science textbooks on NCERT's site, so check the language options at ncert.nic.in yourself. A practical approach for Tamil-medium students:
- Learn each topic first from your State Board Tamil-medium textbook, where you already know the terms.
- Read the same topic in the English NCERT book and note the English technical terms, because the English version decides any translation doubt.
- Practise MCQs in the medium you will write the exam in, so that question styles feel familiar.
Our app has Tamil-medium lessons for Tamil Nadu State Board classes, and our 12th Physics guide covers the State Board Physics book chapter by chapter. For the overall plan, read how to prepare for NEET; after the exam, our NEET marks vs rank guide explains how scores turn into ranks.
