How to Prepare for JEE and Boards Together in Class 12

You can prepare for JEE and boards together because most of the Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Maths you study for boards is also on the JEE Main syllabus. What differs is how each exam tests it. The answer box shows the monthly focus from November 2026 to April 2027, around JEE Main Session 1 (20 to 28 January), your board exams and Session 2 (2 to 7 April). Below it: how to overlap the syllabus, a plan for each month and why board marks still matter for JEE admissions.

Where JEE and boards overlap, and where they differ#

The Class 12 chapters in Physics, Chemistry and Maths are a large part of the JEE Main syllabus, so every hour you spend understanding them counts twice. The differences are in what each exam rewards.

FormatWritten answers in a fixed timeComputer-based: 20 MCQs and 5 numerical value questions per subject
What earns marksCorrect steps, derivations, diagrams, clear presentationThe final answer; +4 correct, −1 wrong
SyllabusClass 12 onlyClass 11 and Class 12
Main bookYour board textbookNCERT plus one reference book and PYQs

Two things follow from this. First, Class 11 is not in your Class 12 board exam but it is in JEE: mechanics, thermodynamics, chemical bonding, equilibrium, coordinate geometry and more. Keep fixed slots for Class 11 revision every week. Second, boards need writing practice: you can understand a derivation fully and still lose marks if you have not written it out against the clock.

If you study under the Tamil Nadu State Board, your textbooks and the NTA syllabus do not match line by line. Map each chapter against the official JEE (Main) syllabus, and read the NCERT text for Inorganic Chemistry, where JEE questions often follow NCERT closely.

How to study one chapter for both exams#

Use the same five-step routine for every Class 12 chapter, so that one round of study serves both exams:

  1. Learn the concept from your board textbook or NCERT, with the worked examples.
  2. Do the textbook exercises and derivations. This is your board preparation; write at least one derivation or long answer in full.
  3. Solve JEE-level problems on the same chapter from your reference book.
  4. Solve the chapter's previous year JEE questions (see JEE Main PYQ chapterwise).
  5. Close with a mixed check: one board-style answer and a short set of timed MCQs.

CBSE students can use our chapter-wise list of Class 12 Physics derivations for step 2. Samacheer Kalvi students can use the 12th Physics guide and 12th Maths important questions.

Month-by-month plan: November 2026 to April 2027#

November 2026: one syllabus, two uses

  • Apply for JEE Main Session 1 well before 22 November 2026 (corrections 27 to 29 November).
  • Keep pace with the Class 12 chapters your school is teaching, using the five-step routine above.
  • Study JEE high-priority chapters first, including Class 11 ones (see JEE Main chapter wise weightage).
  • Take one full JEE mock a week.

December 2026: finish the syllabus

  • Aim to complete the Class 12 syllabus this month, or as close to it as your school allows.
  • If your school holds exams this month, use them as board practice; do not stop JEE practice for them.
  • Write one full board-style practice paper a week in one subject, rotating subjects.
  • From late December, move to two JEE mocks a week. The exam city slip comes on 30 December 2026.

January 2027: JEE first

  • Make Session 1 the main goal. Revise formula sheets and your error log; take two to three timed mocks a week.
  • Keep boards warm with 30 to 45 minutes a day of written answers or derivations, so the habit does not fade.
  • Download your admit card from 13 January 2027. Your exam is on one of 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 or 28 January 2027.
  • Session 2 forms open on 5 January 2027. You can apply after your Session 1 paper, but before 3 February.

February 2027: boards first

  • Apply for Session 2 by 3 February 2027 if you have not already (late window 4 to 7 February, corrections 8 to 10 February).
  • Switch the balance to boards: past papers, sample papers and full written practice under time.
  • Tamil Nadu HSC practicals are from 8 to 18 February 2027. CBSE schools schedule practicals as per CBSE instructions; follow your school's notice.
  • For JEE, keep two or three short timed MCQ sets a week, so your speed does not drop.

March 2027: board exams

  • Follow your board's date sheet. Use gap days for the next board paper first.
  • After each board paper in Physics, Chemistry or Maths, take a short JEE set on that subject the next day, while it is fresh.
  • After your last board paper, switch fully to JEE: full mocks and revision of your error log. The Session 2 city slip comes on 12 March 2027 and the admit card on 25 March 2027.

April 2027: Session 2

  • Session 2 is on 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 April 2027. The better of your two NTA scores counts, so this is a real second chance.
  • Keep the last two days for light revision and rest.

Board dates to plan around#

CBSE: as of 25 October 2026, CBSE has not released the 2027 date sheet, tentative or final. The exams are expected from February 2027. Watch the examination circulars on cbse.gov.in and fill in your plan once the date sheet is out. Our CBSE Class 12 board exam preparation guide covers the board side, and CBSE sample paper shows where to find the 2026-27 papers. Our 60-day board exam plan is written for Class 10, but the same method works for the last stretch before Class 12 boards.

Tamil Nadu State Board (HSC, Class 12): DGE Tamil Nadu has announced the March 2027 time table.

PaperDate
Practicals8 to 18 February 2027
Theory exams3 to 29 March 2027
Chemistry12 March 2027
Physics23 March 2027
Mathematics29 March 2027

Theory papers run from 10.00 am to 1.15 pm. The full subject-wise schedule is in our 12th public exam time table 2027 guide.

Note the squeeze at the end: the HSC Maths paper is on 29 March and JEE Main Session 2 starts on 2 April. Plan for it now. Keep two short JEE sets a week through March, and after Maths, spend the remaining days on revision from your error log, not on new chapters.

Why board marks still matter for JEE admissions#

Your board result is not just for the certificate. For admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes through JEE Main and JoSAA, you must have:

  • at least 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 (at least 65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates), or
  • a place in the category-wise top 20 percentile of your Class 12 board.

This rule does not stop you from writing JEE Main, but a good JEE rank without it does not get you an NIT seat. In Tamil Nadu, admission to engineering colleges through TNEA is based on Class 12 marks in Maths, Physics and Chemistry, not on JEE. So do not let JEE practice crowd out board writing practice in February and March. Our JEE Main 2027 guide has the full eligibility rules.

A weekly timetable for both#

A sample week from November to mid-January, for a student who attends school:

SlotMonday to FridaySaturdaySunday
Early morning (1 hour)Revise yesterday's chapterClass 11 revisionMock analysis
After school (2 hours)Five-step routine on today's school chapterFull JEE mock (3 hours, shift time)One board-style practice paper
Night (1 hour)Class 11 topic or JEE PYQsError logPlan the next week

In February and March, swap the balance: the Saturday mock becomes a board paper, and JEE gets the shorter night slot.

How to use Alfa Smart for JEE and boards together#

  1. Set up your board and class. Sign up free; onboarding asks your board (for example CBSE or Tamil Nadu State Board) and class, plus your medium if you choose the State Board, and your dashboard then shows your Class 12 subjects with topic progress.
  2. Use the lesson tabs for boards. For each topic, read Learn (summary, key points and worked examples), check the Visual Guide where the topic has one, and take the Practice quiz. After you submit, read the explanation for every question you got wrong. Mark the topic complete to track progress.
  3. Ask Gita on the lesson page when a step in a derivation or example is unclear.
  4. Use the JEE section for the other half. In JEE practice and mock tests, do chapter-wise practice on the same chapter, try previous year questions by year, and take a timed weekly mock with +4/−1 marking. Its result analysis shows what to revise first. Mock questions are single-correct MCQs, so practise numerical value questions from NTA papers and your book too.
  5. Study with friends. In a study room, pin the topic you are all revising before a board paper, or join a teacher's live class.

Some practice sets and mocks are Premium; see plans. More JEE guides are in the JEE category.

Frequently asked questions

Can I prepare for JEE and boards together in Class 12?

Yes. Most of the Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Maths in your board syllabus is also in JEE Main. Study each chapter once for understanding, then add board-style written practice and JEE-style timed problems on the same chapter, and keep separate weekly slots for Class 11 revision.

How should I divide time between JEE and boards?

There is no fixed ratio. A practical approach is to lean towards JEE in November to January, with Session 1 on 20 to 28 January 2027, then towards boards in February and March, while keeping short daily practice for the other exam.

Is 75% in Class 12 compulsory for JEE Main?

Not for writing the exam. For admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes, you need at least 75% aggregate in Class 12 (65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates) or a place in the category-wise top 20 percentile of your board.

When are the CBSE Class 12 board exams in 2027?

As of 25 October 2026, CBSE has not released the 2027 date sheet. The exams are expected from February 2027. Check the examination circulars on cbse.gov.in for the official dates.

How do I manage JEE Main Session 2 after the Tamil Nadu HSC exams?

The HSC Maths paper is on 29 March 2027 and Session 2 starts on 2 April 2027. Keep short JEE practice going through March, and use the days after your last board paper for revision from your error log rather than new chapters.
