JEE Main Chapter Wise Weightage for Physics, Chemistry and Maths

NTA does not publish JEE Main chapter wise weightage. What it does fix is the paper split: 25 questions and 100 marks for each of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The answer box shows that official split; below it, we group every syllabus unit into high, medium and lower priority tiers based on how often the topics turn up in past papers, so you know where to spend your time first.

How to read the weightage tiers#

The JEE (Main) 2026 syllabus lists 20 units in Physics, 20 in Chemistry and 14 in Mathematics. Each shift picks 25 questions per subject from these units, and the mix changes from paper to paper. That is why no one can honestly say "Electrostatics always has 3 questions".

What we can say, after going through past papers, is that some units appear in almost every shift, some appear often, and some appear only now and then. We have grouped the units that way:

  • High priority: appear in nearly every shift, often with more than one question. Study these first and revise them most.
  • Medium priority: appear regularly. Do not skip them; they decide the gap between a good and a great score.
  • Lower priority: appear less often or carry fewer questions. Cover them, but after the first two tiers.

Unit names below follow the official NTA syllabus for 2026. Always check the latest syllabus on jeemain.nta.nic.in before you plan.

Physics chapters#

PriorityUnits (NTA syllabus)
HighKinematics; Laws of Motion; Work, Energy and Power; Rotational Motion; Electrostatics; Current Electricity; Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism; Optics; Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation; Atoms and Nuclei
MediumUnits and Measurements; Gravitation; Properties of Solids and Liquids; Thermodynamics; Kinetic Theory of Gases; Oscillations and Waves; Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents; Electronic Devices
LowerElectromagnetic Waves; Experimental Skills

Mechanics and electricity together form the backbone of the paper. Many students find Rotational Motion hard, so start it early rather than leaving it for the end.

Chemistry chapters#

PriorityUnits (NTA syllabus)
HighChemical Bonding and Molecular Structure; Chemical Thermodynamics; Equilibrium; Redox Reactions and Electrochemistry; p-Block Elements; d- and f-Block Elements; Coordination Compounds; Some Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry; Organic Compounds Containing Oxygen
MediumSome Basic Concepts in Chemistry; Atomic Structure; Solutions; Chemical Kinetics; Classification of Elements and Periodicity; Hydrocarbons; Organic Compounds Containing Halogens; Organic Compounds Containing Nitrogen; Biomolecules
LowerPurification and Characterisation of Organic Compounds; Principles Related to Practical Chemistry

Inorganic Chemistry questions are often close to the NCERT text, so careful reading of NCERT pays off directly. In Organic Chemistry, General Organic Chemistry (Some Basic Principles) is the foundation for every later unit.

Maths chapters#

PriorityUnits (NTA syllabus)
HighIntegral Calculus; Limit, Continuity and Differentiability; Co-ordinate Geometry; Three Dimensional Geometry; Vector Algebra; Matrices and Determinants; Sequence and Series; Statistics and Probability
MediumComplex Numbers and Quadratic Equations; Permutations and Combinations; Binomial Theorem; Differential Equations; Sets, Relations and Functions
LowerTrigonometry (as a stand-alone unit)

Trigonometry is placed lower only as a separate unit. Its identities are used throughout Calculus and Coordinate Geometry, so you still need to be fluent in them.

High weightage, low effort chapters#

Some units appear often but need less time to master than others. They are good places to collect marks early:

  • Physics: Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation, Atoms and Nuclei, Electronic Devices, Units and Measurements. Mostly direct formula use with short calculations.
  • Chemistry: Coordination Compounds, Biomolecules, p-Block and d- and f-Block Elements. Largely NCERT-based facts and rules.
  • Maths: Matrices and Determinants, Vector Algebra, Three Dimensional Geometry, Statistics. Standard methods that repeat across papers.

"Low effort" does not mean "no effort". These chapters still need practice with past questions, because the marks are lost through small slips.

Most important chapters for JEE Mains, subject by subject#

If you had to pick a short list to secure first, it would be: Electrostatics, Current Electricity and Modern Physics in Physics; Chemical Bonding, Coordination Compounds and Organic Compounds Containing Oxygen in Chemistry; and Integral Calculus, Coordinate Geometry and Vectors with 3D Geometry in Maths. This is guidance, not a guarantee; any unit in the syllabus can be asked.

How to use weightage in your plan#

  1. Order your study by tier. Finish high-priority units in each subject first, then medium, then lower.
  2. Revise in the same order. In the last month, give your high-priority units two full revisions.
  3. Practise past questions chapter by chapter. Our JEE Main PYQ chapterwise guide shows how to use previous year questions for each unit.
  4. Pick one good book per subject. See our list of the best books for JEE; do not collect more than you can finish.
  5. Do not drop units completely. With +4 and −1 marking on every question, a skipped unit costs marks you cannot recover elsewhere.
  6. Test yourself in timed conditions. Chapter tiers tell you what to study; JEE practice and mock tests tell you whether it worked.

Frequently asked questions

Does NTA publish JEE Main chapter wise weightage?

No. NTA publishes the syllabus and the paper pattern (25 questions per subject, 20 in Section A and 5 in Section B) but not the number of questions from each chapter. Weightage lists, including the tiers on this page, are based on past papers.

Which are the high weightage chapters for JEE Mains?

Units such as Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Modern Physics, Chemical Bonding, Coordination Compounds, Integral Calculus, Coordinate Geometry and Vectors with 3D Geometry appear in almost every shift. Treat them as high priority, but do not skip the rest of the syllabus.

What are the most important chapters for JEE Mains Chemistry?

Chemical Bonding, Coordination Compounds, the p-, d- and f-block units, Equilibrium, Thermodynamics, Electrochemistry and Organic Compounds Containing Oxygen are high priority. Inorganic Chemistry questions often follow the NCERT text closely.

Is there negative marking for numerical questions in JEE Main?

Yes. Under the JEE (Main) 2026 bulletin, both Section A (MCQ) and Section B (numerical value) questions carry +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong answer.

Can I skip low weightage chapters for JEE Main?

It is risky. Any syllabus unit can be asked, and each question is worth 4 marks, so skipping several units can cost a lot of percentile. Study them after the high-priority units instead.
