Best Books for JEE Main and Advanced: Physics, Chemistry and Maths

The best books for JEE are the ones you actually finish. Start with the NCERT Class 11 and 12 textbooks, add one theory-plus-problems book per subject, and then practise previous year questions. The summary table below lists widely used books for Physics, Chemistry and Maths and marks which suit JEE Main and which are mainly for JEE Advanced. NCERT first: why it comes before any reference book#

For JEE Main, NCERT is not optional. The NTA syllabus is built on the Class 11 and 12 curriculum, and many questions, especially in Inorganic and Organic Chemistry, follow the NCERT text closely. Before you buy anything else:

  • Read each NCERT chapter fully, including examples, tables and boxed notes.
  • Solve the in-text questions and exercises.
  • Mark the lines that state rules, exceptions and reaction conditions; these are often tested directly.

Map each NCERT chapter to the units in the official JEE (Main) syllabus on jeemain.nta.nic.in. Where the JEE syllabus does not include a topic, you can skip it for JEE.

Best book for JEE Physics#

  • Concepts of Physics by H.C. Verma (Bharati Bhawan). The most common first reference after NCERT. Clear explanations, worked examples and graded exercises. Enough depth for JEE Main and a strong base for Advanced.
  • Understanding Physics series by D.C. Pandey (Arihant). Topic-wise volumes with a large number of objective questions. Good for JEE Main practice once concepts are clear.
  • Fundamentals of Physics by Halliday, Resnick and Walker (Wiley). A detailed university-level text. Useful if you like reading theory in depth; not essential for JEE Main.
  • Problems in General Physics by I.E. Irodov. For JEE Advanced aspirants who have finished the basics. Many problems are harder than JEE Main needs, so do not start here.

Suggestion: NCERT plus H.C. Verma, then one practice book, is enough for most JEE Main students.

Best book for chemistry for JEE#

Chemistry splits into three parts, and each needs a slightly different approach.

Physical Chemistry

  • O.P. Tandon, Physical Chemistry (G.R. Bathla). Theory with plenty of solved examples.
  • N. Avasthi, Problems in Physical Chemistry (Balaji). A problem book for numericals such as mole concept, equilibrium, thermodynamics and electrochemistry.

Inorganic Chemistry

  • NCERT is the main book. Read it several times; many JEE Main inorganic questions can be traced to it.
  • J.D. Lee, Concise Inorganic Chemistry (Indian adaptation, Wiley). For extra depth, mostly for Advanced. Use it selectively.

Organic Chemistry

  • NCERT for reactions and named reactions.
  • M.S. Chauhan, Advanced Problems in Organic Chemistry (Balaji). Practice for mechanisms and conversions, especially for Advanced.
  • Organic Chemistry by Morrison and Boyd (Pearson) or by Solomons and Fryhle (Wiley). Detailed textbooks for students who want to understand mechanisms deeply. Optional for JEE Main.

Best book for JEE Maths#

  • R.D. Sharma, Objective Mathematics (Dhanpat Rai). Builds speed with objective questions after NCERT. Suits JEE Main.
  • Cengage Mathematics series by G. Tewani (Cengage). Separate volumes by topic (such as Algebra, Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, Trigonometry, and Vectors and 3D Geometry), with theory and graded exercises. Useful for both Main and Advanced.
  • Skills in Mathematics series by Amit M. Agarwal (Arihant). Separate Calculus volumes are popular for practice.
  • Problems Plus in IIT Mathematics by A. Das Gupta (Bharati Bhawan). For JEE Advanced-level problem solving.
  • Classic texts: S.L. Loney (Trigonometry, Coordinate Geometry) and Hall and Knight (Higher Algebra) are old but still valued for concepts. Optional.

Suggestion: NCERT, then either R.D. Sharma or Cengage for practice, not both at the same time.

Best books for JEE Mains vs JEE Advanced#

GoalWhat to use
JEE Main onlyNCERT + one reference per subject (H.C. Verma, O.P. Tandon or N. Avasthi, R.D. Sharma or Cengage) + previous year questions
JEE Main and AdvancedThe above, then Irodov (selected problems), J.D. Lee, M.S. Chauhan and Problems Plus in IIT Mathematics

PYQ books#

Previous year questions are the most useful "book" in the last few months. NTA publishes recent JEE (Main) question papers and final answer keys on jeemain.nta.nic.in. Several publishers also sell chapter-wise solved collections of past JEE papers. Any one reliable collection is enough; check that the solutions match NTA's final answer keys. Our JEE Main PYQ chapterwise guide explains how to use them.

How many books are enough?#

Fewer than most students think. A practical rule:

  1. NCERT for all three subjects.
  2. One theory-and-problems book per subject.
  3. One PYQ collection.
  4. Regular mock tests.

Finishing one book properly beats starting five. Use the tiers in our JEE Main chapter wise weightage guide to decide which chapters of each book to do first, and follow the timeline in how to prepare for JEE Main 2027. Frequently asked questions

What are the best books for JEE Mains?

Start with the NCERT Class 11 and 12 textbooks. Then add H.C. Verma for Physics, O.P. Tandon or N. Avasthi for Physical Chemistry with NCERT for Inorganic and Organic, and R.D. Sharma or Cengage for Maths, followed by previous year questions.

Which is the best book for JEE Physics?

Concepts of Physics by H.C. Verma is the most widely used first reference after NCERT. Add D.C. Pandey for objective practice, and I.E. Irodov only if you are aiming for JEE Advanced.

Which is the best book for JEE Maths?

For JEE Main, R.D. Sharma Objective Mathematics or the Cengage series by G. Tewani after NCERT. For JEE Advanced, add Problems Plus in IIT Mathematics by A. Das Gupta.

Is NCERT enough for JEE Main Chemistry?

NCERT covers most of Inorganic Chemistry and much of Organic Chemistry, but Physical Chemistry needs extra numerical practice from a book such as N. Avasthi or O.P. Tandon. Previous year questions show where NCERT alone is not enough.

How many books should I use for JEE preparation?

NCERT plus one reference book per subject and one previous year question collection is enough for most students. Finishing fewer books thoroughly is better than starting many.
