Groups offered in 11th in Tamil Nadu#

In Tamil Nadu State Board (Samacheer Kalvi) higher secondary schools, every student studies Part I (Tamil or another language) and Part II (English), plus a group of main subjects in Part III. The group you pick in Class 11 continues into Class 12, and your Class 12 subjects decide which degrees you are eligible for.

Students often call the groups by informal names such as "first group" or "bio-maths". Officially, each approved combination has a group code that appears in school and examination records and is sometimes asked for in admission forms. Codes differ between combinations and schools, so take the exact code from your school rather than from a website.

Change from 2025-26: under the Tamil Nadu State Education Policy 2025, the regular Class 11 public examination has been dropped from the 2025-26 academic year. Public exams are now held in Class 10 and Class 12, and the Directorate of Government Examinations continues to hold Class 11 exams only for students clearing earlier arrears. Class 11 is still important: the Class 12 syllabus and every entrance exam build on it.

Subjects in each group#

Maths-Biology group

Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology (Biology here covers botany and zoology). This is the widest science combination: it meets the subject rules for NEET and for engineering, so it suits students who are not yet sure between medicine and engineering. It is also the heaviest workload.

Computer Science with Maths

Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science. It meets the subject rule for B.E. / B.Tech admission through JoSAA (Physics and Mathematics compulsory) and through TNEA (Maths, Physics and Chemistry). It does not include Biology, so NEET is not possible with this group.

Biology with Computer Science

Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science. It meets the NEET subject rule (Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English) but does not include Maths, so engineering through JEE or TNEA is closed.

Pure Science

Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology as separate subjects. It suits students sure about medicine, life sciences or allied health. Like the group above, it does not include Maths.

Commerce

Accountancy, Commerce and Economics, combined with Business Mathematics and Statistics or with Computer Applications (combinations vary by school). It leads to B.Com, BBA, Chartered Accountancy, economics and finance.

Humanities (Arts)

Combinations of History, Economics, Political Science, Geography and similar subjects. It suits students interested in law, social sciences, languages, journalism, teaching and civil services.

Vocational groups

Vocational groups combine theory and practicals in a trade area, such as basic engineering trades, agriculture or accountancy and auditing, with related subjects. They are designed for skills and job-readiness. Check the eligibility of any degree you want later, because many degrees ask for specific academic subjects.

Best group for NEET and JEE aspirants#

  • NEET only: any group with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Maths-Biology, Biology with Computer Science, or Pure Science) meets the subject rule. Pure Science gives the most Biology time.
  • JEE only: Computer Science with Maths or Maths-Biology. For B.Tech admission through JoSAA, Physics and Mathematics are compulsory.
  • Not sure yet: Maths-Biology keeps both doors open. Be honest about the workload: four heavy subjects plus entrance preparation.

How to decide#

  1. Start from interest, not marks alone. Which Class 10 subjects did you enjoy working on, not just score in?
  2. Check your Maths comfort. Engineering, architecture and many science degrees need Maths in Class 12.
  3. Keep options open if unsure, but only if you can manage the extra load.
  4. Talk to people in the field and to your teachers, who have seen how you work.
  5. Look at the subject rules of two or three courses you might want after Class 12.
  6. Check what your school offers. Not every school has every group.

Whatever group you choose, the habits you build in Class 11 matter. See how to study effectively for a daily study plan.
